In its first week, the album sold 8, copies in Britain. After dropping down the chart in late , the album began climbing the chart again; by the end of , the album had sold 95, units in Britain. It peaked at number 5 on the chart in February The tour lasted eighteen months, and passed through the United States and Canada; it then continued to Japan, to promote his album Aladdin Sane Notably, on 20 October , Bowie performed a show in Santa Monica recorded for radio broadcast.
Pennebaker directed a documentary and concert film featuring Bowie and the Spiders from Mars performing in the final Ziggy Stardust Tour, at the Hammersmith Odeon , London on 3 July The full-length minute film spent years in post-production  before finally having its theatrical premiere at the Edinburgh Film Festival , on 31 August James Johnson of New Musical Express NME said the album has "a bit more pessimism" than on previous releases, and called the album's songs "fine".
But while Cromelin thought it was good, he felt that the record and its style might not be of lasting interest: "We should all say a brief prayer that his fortunes are not made to rise and fall with the fate of the 'drag-rock' syndrome". He further called Bowie "one of the most distinctive personalities in rock" and believed that should Bowie ever become a star "of the Ziggy Stardust magnitude", he deserves it.
Ziggy Stardust has been retrospectively acclaimed by critics, and recognised as one of the most important glam rock albums. Obviously, contrarians will insist other albums have proven to carry greater cultural weight or defined his artistic legacy better, but revisit Ziggy today and its visceral and emotional impact remains undeniable. Especially when played, as advised, 'at maximum volume' Ziggy reflected and shaped its time and its audience like no other album". The concept of Ziggy Stardust was revisited by Bowie himself in his next album Aladdin Sane , which topped the UK chart, and was his first number-one album.
Described by Bowie as "Ziggy goes to America", it contained songs he wrote while travelling to and across the US during the earlier part of the Ziggy tour. On the album's liner notes, Bowie wrote "Had Seu Jorge not recorded my songs in Portuguese I would never have heard this new level of beauty which he has imbued them with". The album was covered as part of rock band Phish 's Halloween 'musical costume' on 31 October Ziggy Stardust has frequently appeared on numerous lists of the greatest albums of all time by multiple publications.
According to Acclaimed Music , a site which uses statistics to numerically represent reception among critics, Ziggy Stardust is the 16th most celebrated album of all time. Toby Mountain remastered the album at Northeastern Digital Recording, Southborough, Massachusetts ,  from the original master tapes for Rykodisc. The remaster on this edition reverses the left and right stereo channels on the first disc and many of the songs have been edited. Three days later he was contacted by Abbey Road Studios and subsequently interviewed and offered a position the following day. Scott began working the following Monday at the age of just His first job was in the tape library, and within six months he was promoted to 2nd engineer known then as a "button pusher" , where his first session was on side two of the Beatles ' album A Hard Days Night.
After a short time as an assistant engineer, Scott was promoted to "cutting" known as mastering today , where he spent approximately two years cutting not only acetates for artists, but the masters for many of the hits that EMI also distributed at the time, including the American Motown catalogue. In September , Scott was promoted to engineer, where his first session was with the Beatles on their song " Your Mother Should Know ".
His first orchestral recording session came a few days later when he recorded the strings, brass and choir for the band's song " I Am the Walrus ". After a short time he took over the mixing of Elton John's Madman Across the Water , after fellow Trident engineer Robin Geoffrey Cable suffered severe injuries in a traffic accident. By this time Scott wanted to move into production, and Bowie said he was about to start a new album and didn't feel comfortable about solely producing himself, so it was agreed that they would co-produce what became Hunky Dory.
During his time at Trident Studios , Scott also teamed up with Supertramp for Crime of the Century  in what amounted to a breakthrough album nearly everywhere in the world except the United States. While most albums were routinely recorded in two weeks at the time, [ citation needed ] Crime of the Century was an exception, taking a painstaking six months, as Scott and the group sought a precision to the recording and mixing not found in much of the music recorded at the time.
